Day 1: Arrive, Half Day Tour

On your first day in Panama City, aim to arrive by early afternoon to make the most of your time. After checking into your hotel and taking a moment to unwind, go on a must-do half-day Panama City tour, which uncovers some of the city’s top attractions. This carefully curated tour showcases the essence of Panama City, allowing you to experience its most iconic sights firsthand.

Begin your tour at Flamenco Island, where the shimmering waters and breathtaking skyline create a captivating backdrop for an incredible day ahead. As you continue along the Amador Causeway, a picturesque stretch connecting several islands, you’ll be treated to panoramic views of the city that are sure to leave you in awe. One highlight of the tour is the Puente De Las Américas (Bridge of the Americas), a famous architectural marvel that spans the Pacific entrance of the Panama Canal.

The tour concludes in Casco Viejo, a historic neighborhood that gives charm, cultural richness, and architectural beauty. Stroll through its cobblestone streets, encounter well-preserved colonial buildings, picturesque cafes, and lively plazas. Casco Viejo’s unique blend of history and modernity promises to captivate your senses, creating a truly memorable beginning to your Panama City adventure. For budget-conscious travelers, it’s worth noting that this half-day tour was booked through Airbnb Experiences at a cost of $55 per person.

After a day of adventure, treat yourself to the incredible food scene in Casco Viejo. One standout option is Tantalo Restaurant, a place with a cozy atmosphere that quickly won us over. Their menu offers a wide variety of dishes, including fresh and flavorful seafood as well as delicious local specialties that showcase the flavors of Panama.

Day 2: Paradise Found- San Blas Islands

Get ready to be mesmerized by the breathtaking beauty of the San Blas Islands, a tropical paradise awaiting your discovery. The all-day tour will take you to 3-4 stunning islands, where you’ll find palm-fringed beaches, crystal clear waters, and vibrant coral reefs. Spend the day under the warm sun, kayaking, snorkeling amidst colorful marine life, and savoring refreshing drinks like pina coladas. Take a dip in a natural swimming pool located in the middle of the ocean before concluding the excursion. It’s advisable to book this highly popular experience in advance. The total cost for this amazing Panama excursion was $155 per person.

After an exciting day of adventure, indulge in an exceptional dining experience at Wahaka Restaurant. Located in the heart of Panama City, this culinary gem seamlessly blends Mexican and Panamanian flavors that will leave your taste buds craving more. Don’t miss the opportunity to try their signature Wahaka Mule, as it’s one of the best mules I’ve ever had.

No trip to Panama City would be complete without a visit to the world-famous Panama Canal. Embark on an exciting journey through history and nature with the Ocean-to-Ocean Panama Canal and Jungle Tour. Witness the impressive Panama Canal, an engineering marvel that connects the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.

As you explore the canal and venture into the lush jungle, get ready for an exciting encounter at Monkey Island. Here, you can interact with and feed these adorable monkeys. Your final stop is at San Lorenzo, located within a protected forest. Here, you’ll have the chance to admire the historic ruins of Fort San Lorenzo and enjoy a delightful picnic lunch. I highly recommend booking this popular experience in advance, as it tends to fill up quickly. The total cost for this must-do Panama excursion is $125 per person.

As this will be your final night in Panama City, I recommend heading back to Casco Viejo to immerse yourself in its lively nightlife. Consider having a memorable dinner experience at La Vespa Restaurant, where you can enjoy delicious salmon, mouthwatering desserts, and refreshing drinks while being mesmerized by panoramic views of Panama City’s captivating skyline. To truly make the most of your evening, check out the popular nightclubs like Buena Vaina and Chupitos 507, scenes are nice but I will say they truly only come alive on weekends.

Day 4: Final Tour Day and Departure

If your flight departs later in the day, maximize your morning by visiting Mahalo Cocina y Jardin. This charming eatery offers a delightful fine-dining experience with its outdoor seating surrounded by a beautiful garden. If you’re unsure about what to order, I highly recommend trying either the burrito or huevos rancheros, paired with a refreshing green smoothie. These options are sure to satisfy your taste buds and leave you with a memorable culinary experience.

Before you bid farewell to Panama City, explore Plaza de Francia—a beautiful plaza honoring French engineers who contributed to the Panama Canal’s construction. This plaza offers picturesque surroundings and panoramic views, creating a serene atmosphere for reflection and appreciation of the city’s fascinating history. Conclude your Panama City adventure with a leisurely stroll through the lively streets, decorated with colorful buildings, and vibrant markets, adding a final touch of charm to your experience. While Panama offers unique handicrafts, it’s worth noting that they may not be as affordable as in other Central American countries. Keep in mind that most souvenir shops prefer not to negotiate prices with tourists.

Where to Stay in Panama City

Panama City offers a range of accommodation options to suit every traveler’s preferences. Whether you are looking for luxury, comfort, or budget-friendly stays, there’s something for everyone. I highly recommend staying in Casco Viejo, the social heart of Panama, and near top tourist attractions. It offers convenience, saving time, and money on travel.

Here are some recommended hotels that offer exceptional experiences and easy access to the city’s attractions:

  • Luxury: Central Hotel Panama Casco Viejo Indulge in opulence and world-class service at this elegant hotel, ideally located in the heart of the city.
  • Comfort: Villa Palma Boutique Hotel – Enjoy modern amenities and a welcoming atmosphere at this centrally located hotel, perfect for a relaxing stay.
  • Budget: Casa Mallet by Wynwood House – Experience affordability without compromising on comfort at this cozy hotel, offering great value for money. Only 650 feet from the center.
  • Budget: Apartment- Spacious 1 bedroom apartment offering great value for money with a patio. Note there is a nightclub across the street so if you are a light sleeper, this may not be the spot for you.

Additional Tips and Information

  • Transportation: Getting around Panama City is convenient, with taxis and ride-sharing services readily available. During my visit, I found Uber to be a reliable and affordable option, so I didn’t personally use public transportation. However, it’s worth noting that Panama’s public transportation system, including buses and the metro, is known for its reliability and cost-effectiveness.
  • Currency: The official currency of Panama is the Panamanian Balboa (PAB). However, the U.S. Dollar (USD) is widely accepted throughout the country.
  • Language: Spanish is the official language of Panama, but English is spoken in many tourist areas. However, it’s important to note that many locals may not be overly chatty in conversations. Don’t take it personally if they don’t engage extensively in conversation; it’s simply a cultural norm.
  • Weather: Panama City experiences a tropical climate, with warm temperatures year-round. Be prepared for occasional rain showers, especially during the rainy season (May to December).
  • Safety: Like any travel destination, it’s important to stay vigilant and take necessary precautions. Stick to well-lit and populated areas, and avoid displaying valuable items openly.

Money-Saving Tips

If you’re looking to experience Panama City on a budget, here are some tips to help you save money during your travels:
